This is NOT a 'travesty'! This is one of RM's: "Personal
Collection", "LOOK". "MINT", "One owner from new", ad nauseam... ha ha!

Hmmmm
Maybe that is a direction I should take with the old BC-779 SP-200 I
don't
know what to do with since it followed me home 20 years ago. Been
modified
but not irreversibly. Any suggestions?

Modern 1st RF, Pullen Mixer, product detector, multi mode AGC. This can
be
tubes, or a mix with some SS.

An 8 Pole xtal filter in IF to sharpen skirts when needed, Diode
switched
and selectable for different modes if desired. Do away with the
original
xtal filter and replace with a T Notch.

Maybe a Lamb style noise blanker as used in the HQ-180 option or SX-28.

Slightly modify the audio to replace the 6F6's with 6V6's to reduce
current,
improve efficiency, and deliver even better audio. This was done in the
SP-400.

And above all either stabilize the LO or go to SS. I gave up on my BC
versions ages ago but recently picked up a $25 SP-400 so its a back
burner
project.

Ive been using the Rhode RF amp design almost since it came out for
several
purposes, its bullet proof.

There are several good circuits in all the links if you go back to his
home
page that could find their way into upgrade projects.

However Ive no intention of defiling my 3 HQ-140's !

Restore it to its original configuration. There is enough parts out
there to do
this.? Just remember that if the modification becomes irreversible,
there won't
be enough of these old rigs for the next generation to appreciate how
these were
originally built/used.? But since it's your property, do with it what
you
please. JHMO.?

Don't forget that the IF is 465kHz, at least that's what my book says.

Depends how badly it's been hacked up, Paul. If it's not serious and
you want to enjoy the rig as an 'As-produced/designed' old radio,
putting it back to stock would be the way to go. This is my preferred
method since I can easily find newer radios that will do SSB or
anything the older gear won't do, or do well. OTOH, I do like drop-in
mods or changes that don't require drilling and blasting, as well as
getting out bad components that put items like power and audio
transformers at risk. I used to think 'if it ain't broke, don't fix
it' but realized one day than when it does break I'll still end up
replacing the offending caps, resistors, and probably a lot more.

I've got a pre-war SP-200SX sitting here in the queue that someone
modded by swapping all of the metal octal front end tubes for 9 pin
miniatures along with one other. They did a decent job of it by
removing the tube bases and using existing holes to mount metal plates
with the new sockets, then ran the grid leads neatly under the
chassis. Back when you could get surplus by the pallet and one
receiver was all you had, it made sense to get the most out of it. A
lot of literature exists on mods to the SP line, a good place to start
in the decision-making process.

And there's B+ in some of those innocent-looking cans, too!
