Restore it to its original configuration. There is enough parts out there to do this.  Just remember that if the modification becomes irreversible, there won't be enough of these old rigs for the next generation to appreciate how these were originally built/used.  But since it's your property, do with it what you please. JHMO.

Maybe that is a direction I should take with the old BC-779 SP-200 I don't know what to do with since it followed me home 20 years ago. Been modified but not irreversibly. Any suggestions?
