[Hammarlund] HQ-110 stability, or, making a silk purse out of a pig's ear,

I agree with Carl on the HQ-170 and if you want a really expensive HQ-170, then coupling the Hammarlund HC-10 to the HQ-110 gives you a near equivalent but probably at 3 to 4 times the price of an HQ-170.

The HQ-170 or A variant is still pretty reasonable at hamfests and even at times on ebay. For vintage AM, I think it is the best of the vintage receivers for "battle conditions" where its excellent selectivity and selectable sideband provide potent QRM fighting weapons. It also does a nice job on CW and SSB. For some reason (maybe its more "homely" appearance) the price tends to stay below competitive Halli and National receivers.

I got lucky and found an HC-10 for $50 at a hamfest and it is coupled to my TMC GPR-90. I recently picked up a distressed condition HQ-170 for cheap and I plan to use it as a parts donor to make a "counterfeit" SPC-10 to go with my SP-600.

Good luck with your modifications, please do write up your results when you finish.

Or get a HQ-170 and not have to rebuild it so it works well.

The HQ-145 is also a nice GC and Ham set, sort of a scaled down HQ-180 and
mostly off the radar..
