[Hammarlund] HQ-110 stability

I have a HQ-100 with the XC-455 BFO installed. However, it doesn't seem to work. So, have been trying to find whatever info was available for it....so far ND.

As a novice in 1959, I used the HQ-100 (which I had previously used as a SWL). As I recall, it wasn't all that selective on CW (but worked well as a SWBC rcvr), which was good in one way...it made be a better cw listener. Plus, I never have gotten real comfortable with the BFO system. That paid off since I am now back to all boatanchor rcvrs, most of which require some good ear filters. These new FT-TS-IC200000s can spoil that dependency.

I have a HQ-110 and was pleasantly surprised at how well it worked. The BFO/Q-Mult is much easier to use. I like to get the Q-mult just shy the point of osc. It is fairly narrow (as compared to the HQ-100). Mine is pretty stable and works good on cw (with the ear filters). I haven't noticed any freq. jump, but does drift a bit for a while after turn-on.

There was an optional "real" BFO for the HQ-100. However, the vast majority of those receivers never had this accessory installed.

The HQ 110 is reasonably stable for what it is. I consider it the best bang for the buck for the round shouldered Hammarlunds. They will drift over time but sudden changes in frequency is suspicious. Suggest you do a quck check of the oscillator voltage line, then do a complete cleaning of the tuning capacitor bearings and shaft wipers, including the bfo. Also, you can re-seat all the tubes and de-ox the sockets. This problem sounds like a mechanical situation, not an electrical. FYI: a nice HQ 110 sold at my Radio Club's Saturday auction and I'm happy to report the 110 is holding it's value. If I had my choice of a HQ 100 or a HQ 110 I would go with the 110. Reason being is that there is no bfo circuit in the 100! You have to push the Q multiplier into oscillation to receive CW.
