Tom,
Is the primary of the antenna coil open? They are a common casualty due to lightning and inadvertent transmission into the receive input. The HQ-170 series calibrator is injected into the input side of the antenna coil.

Subject: [Hammarlund] HQ-170A VHF 160 meter issues
Let me try this again but not so fast on the send button
Hello, I have a HQ-170A VHF that is not receiving very well on 160 meters. If I turn the calibrator on I get about and S8 to S9 on 80 through 15 meter bands a little less on 10 meters. On the 160 meter band I am getting about an S2. I suspect that one of the coils or caps in the 160m antenna/mixer/oscillator circuit have changed values. I did a quck peak of the coils in the 160 meter circuit that I could reach on top of the chassis. There is a cap on the underside that I haven't got to yet. I know that teh 160/80 both share the same IF but 80m is working pretty good so I don't believe it is IF related Yet.
Thank You
