On further sleuthing, I found an early HQ-150 manual which, indeed, does
call for a 12AU7 for the BFO/audio.  12AX7 for Q-multiplier.

My HQ-150, SN B6102 is factory marked with a 12AX7 for the audio/BFO tube.
It also uses the 12AX7 for the Q-multiplier.  My manual copy (for "receivers
with serial numbers above B5705") indicates 12AX7 in both locations.
Apparently, there was a change along the way.

The Q-Multiplier uses a 12AX7, perhaps there was a running factory change?
Does anybody have a manual they can look at to see if there might be an
earlier
version or perhaps a different manual?


The receiver works fine, but needs an alignment after replacing a couple of
bad tubes.
