Hi=2C Bill and all.
=20
The Allen/Hex wrench tip is also a good one. Frequently
the plastic or nylon alignment tools don't have the sharp
and precise "corners" that a metal Allen wrench might.
I have had a couple slugs that were cracked and resist
all efforts to remove them intact. About all you can do
then is to DRILL out the slug with a drill bit that is just
a bit larger than the hex hole. As a last resort=2C you might
have to take the slug out in pieces!
=20
Also=2C I just verified in my HQ-100 manual that the local
oscillator is placed 455 kHz ABOVE the desired frequency
on all frequency ranges=2C as somebody previously stated.

Hi Mac=2C=20
You could be right and thanks for the suggestion. However=2C all the other =
slugs turn with ease. Glen's suggestion about the slug being cracked may be=
the answer...ouch. I'll probably leave it be until I get the alignment pro=
blems fixed. When its time to turn it=2C I may try Rodgers hot allen wrench=
idea first....that would also work if its got wax in it. Maybe its in the =
right place...hi.=20
=20
Thanks Rodger and Glen for your ideas on the alignment situation. I'll mull=
them over and go back to work on it tomorrow. I started out just wanting t=
o do some simple maint. on this rcvr....boy=2C how things can change. Thank=
s guys...
Bill

Sometimes=2C the manufacturer puts some wax inside the coil-forms
with the intent to keep the slugs in place. If this is the case=2C a
bit of heat can help to loosen the slug. A low wattage pencil
type soldering iron that can fit INSIDE the slug for a short time
can help to soften the wax (if present) and aid in removing a slug.
Obviously=2C great care must be taken when using this procedure!

k and with minor adjustments=2C the IF is on 455kc. Now for the RF. I'm not=
too sure about this but this is how I interpret the manuals directions: co=
ntrols set same as with the IF adjustment=3B the VTVM still hooked to grid =
of V7 (6AL5) to read a neg. DC voltage=3B sig. gen. connected to the antenn=
a input. First adj. the HF osc. per Fig. 7=2C top & bottom slugs adj. for m=
ax. at freq. specified. Secondly=2C make the RF adj. per Fig. 7: top slug a=
dj. for min. at 1.65mc=2C bottom slug=2C max. at 1.65mc. Next adj. top slug=
at 4mc=2C bottom slug at 10mc...both max. amplitude(?). I assume the 4mc i=
s the one on the 1.6-4mc band and the 10 is the one on the 10-30mc band. Ma=
ke antenna adj. per Fig. 7. Lastly=2C the trimmer adj.=2C per Fig. 8=2C if =
required.=20

>=20
> Now comes a problem. On the 10-30mc band=2C the rcvr is dead from about 1=
1.5mc down to 10mc...no sig. gen. heard in this area. Above 11.5 or so=2C I=
can hear the gen.=2C and with the antenna connected=2C sigs. come thru qui=
te well. Also on the 10-30 band=2C the dial calib. is way off...over a mc.=
=2C ie: 12mc dial =3D 13.516 sig. gen.=3B 11.5mc dial =3D 12.968mc sig. gen=
. This goes on up to 30mc dial =3D 33.268mc sig. gen.=20

>=20
>=20
> On a whim=2C I tried to adj. out some of the dial calib. error with the 3=
0mc HF Osc. cylindrical trimmer cap (Fig. 8). The trimmer screw was out abo=
ut 3/8 inch or so=2C but with it now all the way in=2C the dial error decre=
ased slightly and is per the above para.=20

>=20
> And another woe is that the 10mc RF coil slug (bottom) is stuck. Is there=
anything safe to spray in the can or is a heat gun about the only 'safe' m=
ethod to loosen it. Sure hate to have to remove it. =20
>=20
>=20
>=20
> Excuse the lengthy and rambling presentation...hopefully=2C it is underst=
andable. I have some other issues such as the BFO not working right and an =
addition of the XCU-455 xtal controlled BFO=2C but this is quite enough for=
now. Thanks for any help/suggestions.=20
