I doubt that the shiny metal is a factory finish- probably one of the  
owners stripped the paint and decided to leave it that way.  It's not a  
difficult job to repaint the panel, since all the lettering is engraved.   You just 
have to be careful not to put the paint on too thickly, so that the  
engraving is not filled.  Once the gray paint has dried, you can refill the  
engraving with white.  I use a paint stick, but others use white acrylic,  or 
latex, or even white out correction fluid.  I did my SP-200, and it  looks 
great.
