[Hammarlund] hq180 vernier tuning

My HQ-180 has a vernier tuning kit that was installed by someone after the radio left the factory. It's next to the CW/SSB switch and the slot depth control is now inside the cabinet. The receiver works great with the vernier control turned fully counter-clockwise. As I turn it clockwise toward and past zero the sensitivity reduces considerably. Are there any internal adjustments that affect this control? What is the purpose of this control? My service manual says nothing about it. Hope there's someone out there smarter than me.
