Hi Guys,
Thanks very much for the 4 replies I got so far, from:
'k4icl', 'n9sor' & 'WQ9E', & 'W5KCM'
I have cleaned and recleaned (just now) the band switch with contact
cleaner.
I have tried poking/pressing on it in places where I think the 15m
contact is without any results. I really have zero receive on 15m
and all other bands except 40m are "way down" from where they should
be.
If I could get it to work as well on the bands as it does on 40m I
would be one happy camper indeed !! This would be a hot RX...is it?
Let me ask this:
Using the 100kc Xtal calibrator as an internal signal source, should
the signal be gradually weaker as I move up in frequency?
On 40m it's nearly full scale, but all other bands are very low.
(most around s1-s3 or so......no visible S-meter reading on 6m
however)
On 15m there is NO xtal cal signal at all, nor any from an external sig gen.
Not overly familiar with old RX's but would like to get this working
better than it is.
Will look for a 6C4 as WQ9E suggested and try to figure out where
the 15m coil(s) is....anyone know where I can buy parts?
I'd like to get it working on all bands (even wweeakly) before
attempting a full "tune up"........btw, I think a small wire (like
the leg of a resistor, about 1.5" long, fell out last night when we
had the case off, but I can't say 100% for sure if it was from the
radio or not...but I think so.
Cheers,

Subject: [Hammarlund] HQ-170a intermittent RX problem on certain bands
Hi All,
Finally have acquired a nice, but not pristine mind you, HQ-170a
....I drooled over this model of receiver back some years ago when I
was in tech school, but I digress.
It works *VERY* very well on 40m, and less well on 10m,20m,80m,160m
etc.
It does work for very brief periods on 15m and 6m, but essentially
not useable. When I first got it, it only worked on 3 bands. Using
it a few nights and fiddling seems to have brought a couple bands
alive, but very weakly.
When switching over to those 2 bands (15/6), the RX will come alive
for anywheres between not at all(usually), to 1/2 a second
(occasioanlly) to a couple minutes (rarely).
I have cleaned the bandswitch with contact cleaner and tried pushing
in a few contacts which I believed to be associated with the 15m
slot, as it was previously 100% dead on 15m. (nothing on internal
xtal cal or external signal gen)
Anyone have any idea what this intermittent problem would/could be?
Like I said, really rocks on 40m and all other bands seem quite a
ways down. 15m/6m essentially 99.999% dead.
Thanks/73
