Rick,

The modern dipped mica caps (available from Mouser and other suppliers) are fine. Neither of my HQ-129X receivers have had a problem but I have used many of these for replacement in my HQ-170 (has the open construction caps in the IF transformers) and in many of my Hallicrafters receivers. In some cases, you may have to use 2 in parallel to hit an oddball value but given the much smaller size of modern parts that shouldn't present a problem.

Although mica caps do go bad I would replace only the units that are defective. I do replace all of the variations of wax paper and black beauty caps when I go through an old receiver but I only replace mica caps that are actually defective. I have around 200 pieces of restored gear here and I am sure I have replaced less than 2 dozen mica caps in total and the majority of those were either the poorly made types used in some later Hammarlund transformers and the caps in the FM discriminator section of the Hallicrafters SX-42/62 family of radios.
