Rick -

That crackling noise could be a bad screen bypass capacitor in an IF
stage, or almost any stage in fact.  Check around to be sure you didn't
overlook one.  Also, those caps should have a voltage rating half again
as high as the unloaded B+ supply.  Remember, the screen voltage will be
very high until the tube warms up and is fully conducting.
