Helping a friend working on his HQ-160 receiver. Interesting that the receiver does have a product detector, but in the CW/SSB mode, the AVC is grounded and the S meter circuit is disabled. One has to ride the RF gain control when copying a SSB signal. 

We changed the circuitry so that the AVC is on and the S meter connected in the CW/SSB modes. The receiver now works great copying CW/SSB with AVC, and a working S meter, with just a few circuit changes. Nothing major.

Makes you wonder why Hammarlund would incorporate a perfectly good product detector circuit in this receiver, yet not use it to its full capabilities as it could have, when these rolled out of the factory.
