Woody,
As others have pointed out, you do not need prior documentation to
apply for your old call under the FCC's vanity call sign
program. But you will have to take an amateur exam and become licensed again.
The prior documentation would be useful if you held a Technician
license prior to March 21, 1987. That previously held license
establishes an examination credit for the current-day general class
ticket provided you take the exam and are granted a licence for the
current-day Technician. See
