I'm not sure if anyone makes them anymore, but GC and others used to 
sell a plain fiberglass rod that I've used in the same way.  It's very 
easy to shape it however you wish and the material holds up pretty 
well.     Various grades of Garolite in 1/8" diameter are available from 
McMaster Carr for around $3 per foot - the FR-4 grade should be pretty 
similar. (Note it's only sold in 4 ft. lengths so you'll have a lifetime 
supply!)
