If you guys could see how UPS (and for that matter many other carriers)
handle packages, you would better understand how this kind of damage
occurs. It is not always poor packaging. In fact, poor packing is not
usually the cause.
I had the pleasure of servicing the radio system at a UPS transfer
station in Mesquite, TX and witnessed enough that I refused to use UPS.
If you want to hear the stories, I will relate them, but suffice to say
I terminated the contract with UPS at the center I managed and switched
to FedEx.
Each carrier has problems locally and with certain employees, but the
practices at UPS are geared to cause damage, especially to sensitive
gear. They tell you verbally, if you ask, to pack the equipment for a 3
ft. drop. The best way I have ever guaranteed no damage is to purchase
a large amount of insurance (value I could establish), which causes the
clerk to have the manager look at the packing. When they accept that
package, it becomes a personal responsibility and they won't let
anything through that won't make the trip.
Read the website of any shipper you choose. They will give packing
directions. If you don't follow their rules, they aren't going to pay
period and you have no recourse. Keep in mind when you purchase
coverage, it ISN"T insurance, just damage coverage subject to federal
law, and they know the law better than you.
