Dan,

You might want to consider a Radio Shack DX-394. I'm not sure what they are going for 
these days but they are compact, digital and easy to operate. I think they have a slightly 
serious look. Their selectivity is rather poor for serious work but for SWL use, they aren't too 
bad. I use one as my bedside radio. It covers LF, Broadcast & HF to 30 mHz. If he gets into 
it, there is a "support" group on Yahoogroups. Never mind if needs big dials to turn <g>.
