I couldn't live without my hakko 808. I spent years using wick. I told
my xyl to bury me with my hakko. That's how much I like it.
One thing I do with the hakko that I would never try with wick is
"borrowing" working parts to temporarily substitute for bad parts. I
don't mean simple resistors or capacitors, but things like integrated
circuits that were not socketed! 14 quick pulls of the trigger and the
darn thing literally falls out of the board and into my hand. Try that
with wick!
Once I know the borrowed part fixes the unit, I can once again desolder
it and replace it in the original unit easily. The hakko is fast and
clean and there is almost no risk to the known-good part. Other methods
often destroy the part because of too much prolonged heat. But most
times you're removing a bad part anyway so it doesn't matter if you cook
it.
All hail the hakko

Chas,
That's about a hundred dollars, right? One experienced restorer I
know swears by his (I think it's a Hakko), and would not be with out
one.
