[Hammarlund] Hammarlund HQ 180 questions

I have a few questions on a Hammarlund HQ 180 I recently acquired.Yhe  
reciever was stored in a damp location and there is light rust on the  
front panel as well as the chassis.Are there any techniques to remove  
the rust without damaging the paint?
Also the sensitivity seems lacking on the top twp bands.There  are  
signals heard that seen to jump out of a very quiet background.there  
is no background hiss present on these two bands.
Also the alignment seems to be very close on all bands.I've heard the  
failing of the hq 180 on the top band is very common.
