[Hammarlund] HQ180 main tuning

Hi,
I agree, it sounds like a wiper problem rather than cap plates
contacting. I've had the same problem many times, DeOxit on those wipers is
std procedure here whenever working on anything new. Have had it in
SP-600's, and this wk an HQ-180 (do it for both caps). If it were the cap
plates it'd be very noisy, with loss of signal, not just freq. jumping.

Not sure of any trick, but I wanted to mention another possibilty.

I had an SP-600 that behaved the same way after a lengthy storage period. I
found there are wipers that ride on little rings on the capacitor shafts.
At the ends of each section. They can get dust or crud on them that is
sometimes invisible to the naked aye, yet it can disrupt the tuning.

A little shot of cleaner-lube tamed mine right down. I hope yours is that
simple.

Tom

Hi all..I've returned to Illinois after a six year hiatus in Florida. My
HQ180 has sat on a shelf in a heated/air conditioned home while I was away.
I turned it on last night and it works, although it needs some alignment
after being moved by others a couple of times. The main tuning "jumps" on
the three highest bands through the middle portion of the tuning range.
Rocking the main
tuning knob back and forth causes a station to jump up and down two to
three KHZ's, making tuning in a station very difficult. (I have to use the
bandspread.) No mounting or cold solder problems with the main tuning
capacitor assembly. However it looks like one or two of the variable plates
might be dragging against the fixed plates. This is in the section closet to
the front panel. Anyone know of a tool or any tricks to straighten the
plates? Thanks, 73's...Mike
