Jim, naphtha is the real old stuff. I think it is called
Perchloroethylene
<http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Perchloroethylene&redirect=no>
. If you do get the stuff, follow the Material Safety Data Sheet
carefully. Wear latex gloves, eye protection and a well-ventilated
room. If you spill it on yourself, it is not a major concern. It will
go through the gloves, but it takes a few minutes at least. Even then,
about the worst it will do is to dissolve your skin oil. Don't drink
it. Don't wash your eyes with it. Don't set the open bottle by the
Bunsen Burner you use to keep your Coffee Cup warm. And wear eye
protection before the bottle is opened. As my childhood neighbor who
taught me my first lessons in electronics always told me, "Always wear
Safety Glasses. You never know. The Japanese might drop a bomb on the
place." True story. There he was, filing the tip of his soldering
iron, not wearing Safety Glasses. When out of the blue, the Japanese
dropped a bomb on the place. The hot iron flew up and hit him in the
eye, causing him to loose it. Who Knew!

We always used straight alcohol. Had to sign for it from Supply
because it was taxable as Spirits marked >199 proof. Had to keep it
sealed because if you left it open for more than a few hours you had to
dump it. Isopropyl is supposed to be a great cleaner, but after the
'Incident', the Col banned it from the building. Can't blame him. They
had to rip the capstans out of some recorders in Florida and fly them by
Lear-Jet to Central Turkey.

Some people are like a Slinky .. not really good for anything,
but you still can’t help but smile when you shove them down the stairs.
