Yep, Ken has it nailed. I like the looks of them and the original
tuning knobs too, they fit the radio well appearance-wise.
Unfortunately they aren't terribly handy to use, especially for us
guys with big mitts. The chickenheads have a streamline/'Deco' look to
them which is attractive, just not terribly practical if you use the
thing a lot(probably explains the missing paint around controls). And
they are hen's teeth when you try to find one or two missing examples.
No doubt part of Hammarlund's way of dressing up the trusty old HQ-120
which had the round, fluted knobs all around. The 129 and 400 were
postwar versions of the pre-war 120 and 200 series, hence the
similarities. Auto manufacturers did the same thing, basically.
