I could imagine that the shields help get the tubes up to temperature
faster. That way the warm up period where things tend to drift is
shortened? Also, could it be that they help provide thermal mass so that
changes in air flow or ambient temperature have a less (or at least
slower) effect on the components?
And while our fingers don't like those temperatures, maybe the tubes
themselves don't care?!
