[Hammarlund] HQ-170 Receiver

Hello,

I'm kind of new to Hammarlund Radios, I'm now in the process or
restoring a HQ-170. I think this will be a very good receiver when I'm
finished. I have replaced all of the paper caps and I'm going to replace
the electrolytics tonight. The power supply has a large 8 HY coil in the
power supply. It kind of surprised me, most radios do not spend the
money for quality LC filtering (except Collins). All of the tube sockets
are riveted and then soldered to ensure a good ground, very nice. One
thing I found kind of strange is the electrolytic can is marked on the
can with the usual square, triangle etc, but on the bottom of the can
(the brown cardboard) there are no markings. Had to ohm out the wires
to figure out which lead was which cap.

There is some hum, which I think the replacement of the electrolytics
will cure. At first it would not receive anything, I aligned the IF and
it came to life. It is now receiving, but is extremely hard to tune in a
SSB conversation. I hope another complete alignment after cap
replacement will take care of this.

Does anyone make replacement. Telechron Clocks? Is seems like I have
read in the past on the Internet that someone was making reproductions.

Best,
