[Hammarlund] HQ-170 OSCILLATOR STABILITY

This was a common problem and is typical of Hammarlund's of the era. One
mod we used to do in the 60's was easy and helped lessen the time of the
drift. If you stuff cotton balls under the 6C4 oscillator tube the drift
time will be shortened. My 170 used to drift about 9khz on 40 meters from
cold to warm up. This used to take about 2 hours normally but we reduced it
to about 30 minutes with good ole Johnson cotton balls. Another trick used
in the A versions was to leave the filaments on all the time on the 6C4.
Cheers Dave

I just aligned an HQ-170 and found that it took about 4 hours for the
frequency drift to stop. This after replacing the 6C4 oscillator and doing
the VR tube mod. Any HQ-170 owners have the same experience? My 75A-4
settles down to the calibrated settings after about 1/2 hour, and even my
S-40 and HQ-129X settle out after about 45 minutes to an hour.
