[Hammarlund] SP-600 Chokes

Hi Gary,
Check the resistance to ground of the winding. It's possible that
it/they just were overheated, perhaps due to bad filter caps, or lots of
leaky BBOD's. It isn't uncommon that they do get a short, or low
resistance at least, to ground, but you may be lucky. There may be some
bad ones in a graveyard somewhere ;-)
I had one that had been hot, as it looked scorched and the soldered
plug on top was melted out, but I checked it with a megger & it was OK at
500v. It's back in service after repainting.
The windings are 8.5 hy, 170 ohm, and 20 hy, 440 ohm, the lower being
the first one in line.
I hesitate to mention it, but there is risky, VERY UNSAFE remedy if
one is shorted to ground.
Pease note -- This should only be done as a "field expedient" if it's
necessary to keep the rcvr inoperation until a proper replacement can be
obtained. The choke may be isolated from the chassis and left in
operation. The case of it then is at B+ potential, not a good thing to be
around, even if it's covered with tape, etc.
