Thanks for all the guidance, guys.  I pried the cover off the tuning  unit 
without much trouble, and cleaned and lubricated the bearings with a very  light 
oil (Marvel Mystery Oil).  I dip a wire in the oil and touch it to  the 
bearing- one or two drops.  I did find that the gears had been  lubricated by the 
previous owner, and some did get onto the tuning dial.  I  cleaned the dial and 
drives with lacquer thinner (all I had around).  It  seems to  be working 
much smoother now, but tomorrow I'll finish putting it  all together again and 
fire it up.
I did clean the capacitor wipers with Deoxit.
I was glad to see that the previous owner had recapped in the tuning unit,  
as well as under the chassis.  The radio works well, so I'll assume that he  
also did the caps in the IF cans.
Just in time- I've got to start rebuilding a bathroom tomorrow, so the  
radios drop to second priority until that is done.
