Pub? Surely you jest.........it was blown away by Katrina, a genuine Irish
Pub too. But, I do have lots of Guinness and newcastle Brown Ale on hand and
have had a couple this fine afternoon.
Before I have another, let me add this caution.
"Do NOT LUBRICATE the geartrain on a SP-600." Hammarlund didn't put that in
the manual to just irritate someone.
I can guarantee you it will end up on the idler/friction drive wheel. You
"Can Lubricate" the bearings on the four gang tuning capacitor, shafts for
it, the gear mechanism for the band change mechanism and the tuning shaft as
it passes through the front panel and the turret sub-assembly panel (behind
the front panel) "Sparingly" I would suggest a good synthetic lubricant and
not worry about the high sulfur content lubricant crowd that was rampant
here a while back. I wonder how many gears it has eaten
up.....................:-) None would be my guess.
Those tuning condenser covers are sticky sometimes, a jewelers hammer
(rubber mallet) will probably suffice. Or a bump with a screwdriver handle,
YMMV.
Clean up the accumlated crud out of the front and rear bearings first, then
lube, and don't forget to clean the wiper contacts front and rear on the
tuning condenser shafts. And, don't remove the gold (yes, it's gold plating)
from the stator plates on that four gang condenser.
Drink another Guinness and enjoy thet legendary receiver.
PS: I'm recovering from surgery, so the Guinness is recuperative, or so my
drinking buddy the doctor says...............

Yeah, almost forgot to add - be VERY careful where and what you
"lube". The tuning is a friction-drive arrangement, and getting any
lubricant on the edge of those drive wheels will result in dial
slippage that will make you curse! (Don't ask me how I know)
And don't think you're safe if you put a little oil somewhere other
than there: it has a nasty habit of migrating where you do not want
it.
Prof. Locklear can explain it well, as soon as he gets back from the pub!
