It's a pretty snug fit, Ed. After being on for years there could also
be oxidation or other corrosion under there as well making it that
much more difficult.

Tapping may work, or carefully prying around under (not inside) the
edge equally so as not to bind it. It probably just needs a good jar
and some muscle power to free it up. Just be patient and don't resort
to hammers and crowbars, and you should have it off before long. (o:
