John R. Leary would typically take a SP-600 strip the chassis down, removing
resistors, capacitors wiring etc. He would then in his own words,
"Re-Engineer" the Hammarlund SP-600. He would modify them depending on what
that particular person wanted. I owned three of them, two of them had wild
garish colors on the chassis, and if cans. Typically pink, blues and reds.
One was a black faced SP-600 with a product detector that was red, black and
gray. All were "hot" receivers, John would typically add a calibrator with
100 kc and 1 mc markers, dual voltage regulators, an OA2 and a OB2, much
better stability than a stcok SP-600, some had a 6EJ7 for the 2nd mixer with
a potentiometer controlled cathode bias adjust for those weak stations on
the higher frequencies. He solid stated the power supplies, but did it
right, as excess B+ wasn't a problem. John usually supplied a "book" of hand
written notes about that model or it might cover several others he built.
One of the receivers had mostly blue wiring with a white tracer, John must
have had several rolls of that particular color.......:-)
One had a Q-Multiplier that plugged in a rear socket. He built many SP-200
and variants in his early days, even made a National NC-800 using two
NC-400's. He concentrated on the SP-600's in later years. A doctor in South
Dakota used to get another one each year when he attended Dayton, John would
have another ready for him. The last time I spoke with him, He had 7 or 8
Leary SP-600's. Some were numbered, some weren't. The last one I am aware of
was #38 and was a SP-600 with a separate power supply and a product
detector.
Joel Thurtell wrote an article for Electric Radio Magazine a few years ago
about John R. Leary. He passed away a few years ago. He lived in Fortsville,
Indiana.
