[Hammarlund] S Meter

Nearly all citizens band tranceivers have always used the same standard for S meter readings. 50 microvolts at the antenna input is supposed to produce a reading of S9 on the meter. Is this the standard that Hammarlund adhered to, or did it vary over the years or by make and model? One curious thing is the HQ129X, which doesn't really have an S meter. I'd call it as just a signal strength indicator. Anyone know who invented the modern day S meter? Did Oscar Hammarlund have anything to do with that? Mike
