Stanley,

I have no experience rewinding that choke, but I can tell you how I de-tarred a
different transformer (the power transformer from a Heath W-5M amplifier).

I suspended the thing above a big metal coffee can (they don't sell them now,
you have to get an old one) and put the whole busines into my little backyard
grill with a bit of charcoal burning away in there.  The whole mess heated up
enough to let all the tar drip out into the can.
