[Hammarlund] "Original" surviving WVa miner is KC8VKZ

While this may sound harsh, it is based on comments I heard others who were
the victim mention when interviewed a week or two after being rescued.

While they appreciated the outpouring of generosity, they also were buried
by curious people "just wanting to see", newspaper - radio - television -
magazine journalists/reporters demanding stories, insisting on interviews at
all hours of the day and night. Total deprivation of privacy, no respect for
the victim or his/her family, anything for that story! As one victim worded
it: "It was great to know people cared and we sure did appreciate the
donations. But our family was so overwhelmed by the deluge of people that we
damn near went nuts! My wife begged me to sneak out during the night and try
to get a motel a hundred miles away so our ten month little girl could
sleep. It was horrible! People pounding on our mobile home door all day and
all night. They had flood lights set up on big trucks and the noise was
horrible! Man can't these people just do a story and leave us alone?"

Let me suggest that you send a check, not cash. I am sure the volume of mail
this family will be getting is going to bury them up to their ears! So
volunteers will probbably be opening mail and removing your dollars. Not to
say it won't go to the family, but let us not kid ourselves either!

You might be wise to send it to the American Red Cross in their area and
request the money be put into a special account for the family's future or
urgent needs.

Helping is great, God bless all who do and those who wish they had a dollar
so they could. But somebody has to take charge in such situations.

Just my two cents worth, please keep the change, it like my thoughts
probably are not worth much!
