[Hammarlund] HQ-129x - Xtal Calibrator Puzzlement

Hi John

Thanks for looking that up. Not sure, but I think this is an earlier model calibrator as it looks like one referenced on the following web page. (scroll down and there's a reference to the FC-135 and a link with a photo.)

http://eshop1.chem.buffalo.edu/HQ-129-01.html

The send-receive switch is the first thing I grabbed -- just two position, as original. The unit is way in the left rear corner and I don't see any integral slide switch as someone suggested.

I thought maybe this one was strapped to the function switch -- e.g. "manual" vs AVC/BFO -- but that wouldn't make any sense as there would be no BFO. It also seems that the two-position send-rx switch still is purely in "send" mode when switched to that.

If you look at the photo linked to that web page, there's a screwdriver adjustment at the top of the calibrator. I assume that's a variable cap, not a switch.

Maybe I have to whistle or clap? ;-)

Of course, I could clear up some of the mystery or all of it if I'd just pull the chassis and trace the wiring.

Hi Barry,

I have just been through my extensive collection of Hammarlund literature and
the only thing I can find is reference to any calibrator accessory is the
HC-100 calibrator which is recommended for installation in HQ and SP-600
receivers. There was a particular model, number 38657-G2 for the HQ-129X and HQ-140X.
It sold for $17.95. Apparent date of manufacture was 1956.

The instructions state: ".....unsolder the two leads of the send-receive
switch and remove this switch from the front panel of the receiver. Rweplace same
with the new switch supplied with the calibrator kit, securing the new three
position plate under the nut on the front panel." The new switch is indicated
to be
"2P3T." Possibly that is your present switch and the installer didn't use the
panel. The switched lead from the XC-100 calbrator is red.

Please let us all know what you find.

73,

John, W4AWM
