Go ahead and try your VTVM. If it works at all, it'll probably be fine 
for alignment.   After all, you're not going to actually measure 
anything, so calibration's not an issue.  It's just going to be employed 
as a peaking meter. 

One version of the HQ-170 manual listed two different sampling points 
for the meter.  If I recall, the first one mentioned in the text was 
wrong and useless.  The second mention was correct and worked.  Perhaps 
the HQ-180 manual you have is similar.

Good luck. It's a very nice radio.  I sold mine and am sometimes sorry I 
did. (Of course, I'm sometimes sorry I sold any radio I've ever owned. 
If I still had them all, they'd fill a barn -- and that's where I'd be 
sleeping because I'd be divorced and destitute).
