Indeed they are! I have a CEI panadapter for a vhf/uhf receiver (countermeasures) and I could not imagine using the receiver without it. I am now trying to create a mixer circuit that will allow me to use it with my hammarlunds (it has a 21.4mhz input).  I think they save a TON of time bandcruising.  I used to tune across very slowly and often stop thinking I heard something. With this I can fly across the band and stop dead onto signals and know whether they are AM/SSB/CW/FSK without even hearing them!
