[Hammarlund] Landed on my doorstep

Hi Gary,
I see you've already gotten encouragement & some tips for "doing the
job." I'll also say, "DO IT." I enjoy working on SP-600's, have lost
count of how many I've owned + done for others, but I think I presently
have 4 of my own awaiting attn. Sounds like you've got good manual/tech
docs on hand. Boomer wrote some tips, if yours has a s/n above about
17,500 it's got a good chance of having disc ceramics instead of BBOD's,
but as a -JX-1, it's probably lower than that. I'm presently working on
a -JX-1 with s/n approx 4700. It had had previous work done, incl. recap
of the RF deck. I think that's what Boomer's referring to as turret
secn., tho' I call the turret secn the actual turret, with it's plug-in
coil/cap combinations for each band. That part is not hard to do, but the
RF deck, which those plug-ins get attached to as you rotate the turret,
takes me about half of the total re-cap time, as it needs to be totally
removed, and has 20+ caps in it. This one, which has a mfg date of approx
1/52 or 2/52, still had most of the BBOD's under the chassis, and almost
every one of them has split open. You can determine the date of mfg by
looking at the dates printed on the filter cap & the bathtubs. The
factory didn't keep a big inventory, so figure it's within a month or 2 at
most of the dates found. The factory either ran out of BBOD's or realized
their future problem, or got disc cheaper, etc, and went to using discs
totally, even for interstage coupling (only a few of those, in the RF
deck), so you can use discs without feeling guilty abt not paying for
Orange Drops, tho' I usually use O.D. type for the coupling applications.
All the bathtubs in this one (10mf @ 100v) are bad, and I'll mount
discrete caps on a term. strip, tho' I have re-stuffed bathtubs.
Take a look at the 2 URL links in my sig for lotsa info, a
particularly good article in The Hammarlund Historian Service page by Ray
Vasek, W2EC, on recapping.
If I can be of any help, answer questions, etc, pse feel free to write
.
