[Hammarlund] hq-129 paint

Hi Paul,
My HQ-129x had all the original wax capacitors and yet the RF amp was
changed to a 6SG7 and the BFO tube (6SJ7) was rewired to a 6SA7 and became a
product detector.
Can anyone direct me to the pub for this product detector mod of the
HQ-129x?? I am having trouble tracing these changes and would like someday
to reverse engineer it back to the original bfo.
The cabinet had scuffs and chipped paint, so I took the whole cabinet to ACE
hardware. The paint department computer scanned in the color and I left with
a perfect match low luster enamel. After cleaning the cabinet, I first
carefully filled in the chipped spots, waited a day and then lightly rag
painted the rest of the cabinet. Looks great.
Most of the paper-wax capacitors showed heavy leakage on my cap tester and I
replaced them all. Surprisingly, all the carbon resistors were still in
tolerance. My Collins R390 had about ten resistors out of tolerance when I
restored it.
It's a great receiver for its day.
I also have the Comet, HQ-120x, 160, 170vhf, 180a, 215, SP210, 400 and 600.
Let me know if you got any good info direct and how the restoration is
coming,

Subject: [Hammarlund] hq-129 paint

Hello All,

I am in the middle of a HQ-129X restoration,
electrically it seems so far to be in good shape
(I haven't done the alignment yet, cap job in process)
but I would like to do an overspray on the cabinet and the esthcueion (how
the heck is that spelled???) Anyway, if possible, I would like some
recomendations on the correct
paint colors/type to get the restoration as close as
possible to the original. Also, any common factory recommended modifications
around? I generally like
to make factory mods but not the aftermarket stuff....
(If I wanted state of the art I would use my ft-1000mp MK 5)..

Thanks!

73,

Paul W4QG
