[Hammarlund] HQ-110 alignment peculiarities.

I have a nice HQ-110C which seems to be working pretty well since I
went through it, but it has a couple of peculiarities that I cannot yet
figure out.
1) When centering the BFO in the IF passband for most "bassy" sound
with no antenna connected, the BFO pitch control in the center of its
travel, and the "Q" multiplier selectivity control at OFF, one "side" of
zero beat is always significantly louder than the other, when I then
swing the BFO PITCH control from right to left. I have used the above
procedure for years to center the BFO in the IF passband, but in this
case, it doesn't appear to be working, and I am at a loss as to why.
2) The "Q" multiplier is working rather strangely also: no matter how I
try to align it so that when the "Freq" knob is centered when a signal is
peaked in the IF passband, signals are always stronger on one side of
"center" than on the other.
Anyone have a clue? I suspect that the FIRST IF is off frequency some
how, but sensitivity and selectivity are quite adequate on all bands.
6 meters is rather difficult to get tracking of course, but sensitivity is
quite good even there.
