[Hammarlund] product detector for sp-600?

Hello,
I am new owner of very nice sp600 jx-21 sn over 20000.

Receiver is in very good technical and cosmetical
condition (no black beauty's - factory mounted disc
ceramic capacitors).
But there is common problem with receiving ssb.

Have anyone any experience with modification of
sp600 for better reception ssb?
I think about light version - without drilling any
holes something like this:

s-meter modification.

or maybe something with semiconductors? 

I know that many Hammarlund owners have external
adapters
but probably buying it in Europe is very difficult.
