You're at the right place to get Hammarlund restoration info.
For easy/economical starter antenna, just put a piece of wire on the antenna
terminals, don't even bother with coax. The wire doesn't even need to be
outdoors, (run a loop around your house, in your attic, etc. Ourdoors is
better of course, and longer + higher is better, but your are starting to
trade of easy/economical. To get the receiver going, and to get a taste of
shortwave, and random piece of wire will do fine. It is not the "right" way,
and there are certainly better antennas, but it gets you first base.
For fruther reading, hit your local library and try to find copies of the
ARRL Handbook, the ARRL Antenna Book, etc. There's tons of material in the
libraries, as well as online.
Good luck with your new receiver (the HQ180A is a really great old beast),
