[Hammarlund] HQ-series dial calibration hints?

A couple of days ago, I complained (ever so mildly) that dial calibration
and tracking seemed to be relatively sloppy on the Hammarlund HQ-series
receivers.

I have since been assured that patience and perserverance will result in far
better performance than what I have come to expect.

So, what are the tricks in RF alignment of these sets? I played with my
HQ-170A and AN/URM-25D RF generator for several hours last night and still
have a frequency spreads a little wider than the dial limits with variable
tracking. I find the low-end oscillator coils, in partcular, VERY touchy to
adjust.

Speaking of coils, does anyone have a hint about freeing up a stuck slug?
The 3.5 MHz RF coil on my receiver is seriously stuck. I don't wish to
remove and disassemble it unless necessary. (For that matter, does anyone
have a replacement I could buy?).

Thanks and 73,
Craig
