Craig,
FWIW, both my Hammarlund SP 600 JX-17 and HQ 180 AX are very
stable from turn on till whenever! For listening enjoyment I prefer
(1)the SP 600, then (2) the 180AX (both have better audio for my blown
out ears) and finally the R-390A's for when I want to listen to something
weak that I've found with the SP-600.
The 180s are great in that they have 'vernier tuning' and
variable notch filter as well as selectable usb/lsb. A lot of fun and
enjoyable to work with! I wouldn't want to be without any one of
them!!! By the way, the 180A version has a second filament transformer
that is "always powered up" to keep the filaments of the osc and mixer
tubes warm to minimize drift. I keep mine unplugged untill needed.
I wouldn't want to be without any one of them!!!
Then there is the R-392, the National HRO and the Halli SX-71
etc, etc. We could go on forever, but whatever you do, you won't go
wrong with an SP-600, IMHO!
