Yesterday Dean Livingston wrote of my struggle with the R-390A vs the
SP-600: "I would forgo both of them and go with the Ultimate! Knight Star
Roamer!"
Laugh if you will, Dean, but I built a Knight Kit Star Roamer back in '68. I
bought it in person at Allied Radio in Chicago and assembled it that evening
(and maybe the next). For months thereafter I got up at dawn every morning
so I could listen to Radio Australia on it. I had a lot of affection for
that little radio.
Nowadays, of course, I've graduated to more advanced machinery. My bedside
band cruiser of choice now is -- a Hallicrafters S-38. It's the original
model, too, with state-of-the-art features like, umm, a variable BFO control
and a snooze alarm! Here's how the latter works: I've put the receiver on a
timer so that it turns on automatically at my wake-up time (dawn -- so I can
listen to Radio Australia...). When I reach over to turn the radio off, I am
rudely shocked into ready consciousness by the hot chassis. Therefore,
snoozing is alarming.
