1. Meter. My meter sticks a bit, I would be happy to send you my meter if you want it in partial
trade.
When you say it sticks, does it stick in the "rest position" or does it overshoot and stick, or
does it just sit somewhere in the middle and stick ?????
Typicaly the problem is the "end stops". You can open the meter, and remove the "guts" from the
rear. just bend the meter stop so that the meter does not stick, test by blowing on the needle and
see that it moves freely. Could also be loose "jewel mounts" ckeck if the mounts are free / tight
/ too tight. Bad luck if the "jewel" is cracked.
2. Sheilding cover. Not sure the right term for this, but it covers the variable capacitors.
When one opens the top lid of the radio, my variable capacitors are visible. I have seen other
pictures of 140X where there is a cover. I am looking for that cover and whatever screws might
be needed to affix it. A picture can be seen at http://hertzmail.com/hq140x/HQ1402.jpg which is
my machine where the cover is missing and http://hertzmail.com/hq140x/HQ140CVR.jpg where the
cover is present (not my machine).
The cover is nothing more than a bit of bent metal, it keeps the capacitor free of dust. A bent
piece of aluminium with the screw holes will do for this, do you realy need the sticker ?
4. The front panel is in pretty good condition, but curious if someone knows of a service to
repaint/silkscreen them...
Try this. Remove all the knobs, and using a soft cloth, spray some WD-40 (lubricating/penetrating
spray) on the cloth, and wipe over the front panel, be quite liberal, just let it soak there.
After a couple of hours wipe it off, this will clean a LOT of muck off, and do it again, leave
over night, and wipe off. It is amazing how "new" the paint work looks after this.
5. The cabinet is ok, but has several scratches, etc. It seems the paint on the cabinets for the
140X is interesting, not a straight color or finish. Anyone know a reliable place to respray the
cabinet?
Try the same on the cabinet
