[Hammarlund] SP-600 Whazzat!

That would be my guess Al. I've seen the usual attempts at a fix, rubber
bands, o-rings too. Most all problems are caused by someone putting oil or grease
on the gears and it slopping onto the friction idler and the edge of the
logging dial. I use alcohol and clean everything real good, for extreme cases, I
have used ammonia (yeah, I know some say it will cause problems with the brass)
but, never experienced any problems. The cure is to get it clean and dry!

Hi Andy,
I'd suspect that it was some unhappy owner with a lathe who did it,
rather than the factory.
You and Les together have probably seen more SP-600's than anyone in
recent history. If Les hasn't ever seen one, and this is the first one
you've seen, it's probably one of a kind. I've seen a few SP-600's too,
but not a plastic idler. I think I've heard of attempts to "fix" the
problem by putting a rubber tire on the wheel, or some such (didn't work
long, if at all). The contact pressure at that point is extremely high
due to the wedge effect.
I hope the rains out in your area aren't causing slides.

Arright, folks, this is a new one on me:
You know the little grooved brass wheel that goes between the big weighted
brass wheel on the tuning shaft and the vernier dial? It is about the size
of a very thick quarter and slides on a small shaft affixed to the front
panel.
Well, I got a receiver where that wheel is plastic! Not just plastic, but
soft plastic, like 50's baby dolls were made of. It is *exactly* the same
shape and size of the original brass wheel, down to the beveled edges.
Anybody ever see or hear of anything like that?
I hypothesize that they got so many complaints about the brass wheel
slipping that they tried a plastic one, but probably quickly discovered
that
the plastic one wears out quickly and went back to brass.
The one I have is so worn that it couldn't turn anything.
