Mike,
Welcome to an interest in AM.  There are any number of AM transmitters that
will work just as well with your Hammarlund HQ-180 as a Hallicrafters or
genuine Hammarlund.  I use a Johnson Viking Ranger that works very well with
my Hammarlund HQ-110.  Gives me about 40 Watts of well modulated AM output
(or VERY CLEAN  good CW) on 160-10 Meters, is extremely stable and has
internal VFO.  If you want a little more power the larger Johnson rigs are
available too.  There are others out there as well.

Remember, in the days of boatanchor radios, it was VERY common to Mix and
match your transmitter and receiver and many even bought their receivers and
built their transmitters.  While having "matched sets" looks nice, it
doesn't necessarily mean that they work together any better.
