It is possible that one other commentator and I both tested TV baluns which
were NOT made for TV cable use. These would possibly date from the 60s and
early 70s. I "revisited" one such and again tested it for SWR between 1.8
and 28 mhz-NO GOOD. I then hooked it to one of my receivers and checked
sensitivity with the signal generator...at 28 mhz it was fairly usable but
at lower frequencies it was very bad.
This balun is one housed in a metal cylinder about 7/8 inch diameter with
the jack on one end. I took it apart and found that it is series-fed
through a capacitor.....not good for low-frequency use over a wide range.
So perhaps there are "good" and "bad" TV baluns, depending on age and
application. The suggestion to try 'em first before drawing any conclusions
seems to be a good one.
