Hi Craig, I have had severe PC problems lately. I wanted to post a note here
about capacitors. In brief:
Recently, I went back inside my 170A to check a few things. When I bought it,
I replaced the electrolytics, cleaned it etc.
Reexamining the bypass and coupling caps in mine, I noticed that they were
NOT the dreaded 'black beauties'.... They look just like a large Silver Mica.
Just out of curiosity, I tested one of the .01 jobs. Very leaky. I checked one
of the .047s, OK
To make a long story short, ALL of the .01s were leaky, but all of the .047s
were fine.
If anyone is interested, I will describe an excellent method of checking
these type of caps. It was described to me by Dr. Gerald Johnson, the Technical
Advisor of the Collins Collector Assn. Foolproof, simple and cheap. What a
combination!
