Conveniently, a readily available 8 ohm speaker can actually work better with an HQ-170 or 180 than the stock unit. Cranking the AF Gain control up, as you must with the higher impedence speaker, defeats the controversial and often annoying "Hammarlund Auto-Response" feature.  Even Hammarlund had second thoughts about this circuit. In a service letter, owners were told how to bypass it, if they wished.

I've been using a Collins 312B-3 speaker with my Hammarlund receiver and it sounds great. New 4-ohm 6 x 9 inch Collins replacement speakers are available for an uncharacteristically reasonable price from Surplus Sales of Nebraska.
